Do you have an accountability partner?
If you’re like me (a couple months ago me), you probably don’t think you need an accountability partner. You want to keep your goals and aspirations to yourself. If you fail then no one will know. You won’t let anyone else down, just yourself.
But what if you have a big goal? Maybe you want to lose 30 lbs in the next year or make a change in your career. You know how to get there, but some of the steps scare you, and you know you’ll try to avoid them for as long as you can. If you can relate to any of this, it’s time to consider getting an accountability partner.
What’s an accountability partner? Someone who knows your goal and will keep you moving toward it. It could be anyone, your bestie, your significant other, your mom, or even someone who works in the industry where your goal lives. Accountability can be as simple as telling someone your goal and having them check in with you every now and then. Or it could be someone who helps you put the plan in place for you to reach you goal and checks in with you regularly to see how well you are following the plan and where things are falling apart. That person will also help you see where you’re not following all the way through and call you out on that nonsense.
I’ve tried going through many aspects of my life without someone to hold me accountable. From my schooling, to my fitness, to running a business. And let me tell you, it’s much harder to reach those goals when you try to go it alone. I now have a few people to keep me accountable and could always use more. I have a coach for my fitness and had a coach for my business. And i’m definitely considering hiring someone to keep me accountable as I go after my business goals. Having some skin in the game (money) will motivate me to take action consistently.
I used to think that asking for help was seen as being weak or that I wasn’t capable of doing things on my own. But now I see it differently. With these people in my life, I’m able to do and achieve more. Can’t complain about that!
Here are some benefits to having an accountability partner when you’re chasing big goals, health or career related.
#1 It keeps your goal front and center. When you know someone is going to ask you how you’re progressing toward your goal, it’ll light a fire under your ass to get stuff done.
#2 They can help you see the bigger picture. When it’s just you, all you see is the 2 inches in front of you. Your partner in crime will help you see what else is out there, especially if you’re stuck and don’t quite know your next move.
#3. You can bounce ideas off them. As an introvert, I tend to think things through internally before sharing. It’s nice to have someone to share with.
#4. You’ll get to your goal quicker. You’ll do those activities that your fear most but know will get you results sooner. And your accountability partner will keep you focused on what’s important and not what’s in the weeds (should I buy the store brand plain greek yogurt or the organic plain greek yogurt from grass fed cows in the prestigious open farm lands of Nebraska).
