Classic Hummus with Turmeric

My first experience with hummus wasn’t all that great.

It was back in 2006 when I went to my sister’s (closest in age to me) graduation from Brown University. They had a mixer with lots of appetizers. I was hungry, as usual, so I was excited to eat. My sister told me about hummus and encouraged me to try it. Having a nut allergy, I asked if there was nuts. She assured me there weren’t any. Mind you, sesame seeds make my mouth itchy. I didn’t realize i was allergic until much later.

So I’m going to town on this hummus and pita chips when suddenly, I start feeling the same way I do after I eat nuts. My mouth is really itchy, my stomach is upset, and I just feel sick. I ask her again if there’s nuts. Again. she says no. I asked her what else was in it, she listed off the ingredients – tahini aka sesame seeds.

Once I learned how easy it was to make hummus, I started making my own.

And now I get to share my recipe with you. I like to add turmeric for some added health benefits. What’s also nice about making your own hummus is you can put what you want in it and control the salt.

I love homemade hummus! I always add cumin to my hummus, but I have never added turmeric, great idea! Pinned, Thanks!
